They only needed a point to qualify for the tournament after thrashing South Sudan 5-2 in Juba on November 16th last year to stay in the second place of group C, Mali had already qualified with a game in hand topping the group with 11 points. Leaving Gabon needing a win in Bujumbura to qualify with two points adrift the second placed Intamba Murugamba.
The 2019 African Cup of Nations is the first men’s confederation tournament with expanded teams from 16 to 24, two teams from 12 groups qualified for the continent’s prestigious tournament.
Burundi’s Group B includes Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea with only two teams needed to qualify for the round of 16.
