While Burundi’s president attended the 6th European Union and the African Union summit in Brussels that took place from 17th to 18th February, 2022, the European Union announced a support of 214 million Euros to Burundi with 20 million Euros of the amount appropriated for diversity.

The support from EU comes as the European bloc lifted sanctions against Burundi that was imposed in 2016 after reports merged of gross Human Rights violations in the country.

The European Union lifted sanctions against Burundi early this month after what it called a peaceful political process that started with the general elections of May 2020 opened a new window of hope for the population of Burundi.

According to the statement released by the European Union, the Council decided to repeal its decision taken in 2016, which was imposed on Burundi that included the suspension of financial support and disbursements of funds directly to the Burundian administration or institutions.

EU’s decision comes after the US lifted sanctions on Burundi in November last year.
