Burundi’s Supreme Court Chief justice sworn in

Amb. Gamaliel Nkurunziza was sworn in as the new Chief justice of the country’s Supreme Court on November 19th, 2024 at a ceremony held at the Gitega presidential palace.

The event was attended by President Evariste Ndayishimiye, who also serves as the Chief Magistrate of Burundi, among those who witnessed the swearing in included members of the High Council of the Judiciary.

During the ceremony, Amb. Nkurunziza took the oath of office, officially assuming his new role at the head of the Supreme Court. His appointment follows his nomination to the position, which is a key leadership role within the country’s judicial system.

The event was marked by the presence of judiciary officials, underscoring the significance of the occasion in the context of Burundi’s legal and judicial institutions.

Amb. Nkurunziza replaced Emmanuel Gateretse who assumed the office on October 29th, 2019. The Burundi president’s appointment of the new Chief Justice comes at a time when the country is expected to conduct legislative elections mid next year.
