Burundi Dominates Seychelles with 5-0 Victory in World Cup Qualifier

In a commanding performance, Burundi secured a resounding 5-0 victory over Seychelles in their FIFA World Cup qualifying match on March 25, 2025, held at the Stade d’Honneur in Meknès, Morocco.

Burundi wasted no time asserting their dominance, opening the scoring in the 22nd minute through Christophe Nduwarugira, who found the net with an assist from Marco Weymans. The home side continued to pile on the pressure, and just two minutes later, Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana doubled Burundi’s advantage, with Jean Girumugisha providing the assist.

Seychelles struggled to contain the attacking force of Burundi, and by the 31st minute, Bimenyimana struck again to make it 3-0, capitalizing on a pass from Jordi Liongola. The first-half onslaught was just a preview of what was to come.

In the second half, Burundi showed no signs of slowing down. The 50th minute saw Bienvenue Kanakimana add a fourth goal, further cementing the team’s superiority. Finally, in the 56th minute, Jean Girumugisha completed the rout, scoring the fifth goal of the match, ensuring a dominant 5-0 victory.

This emphatic win sees Burundi move to third place in Group F with 10 points from six matches, boasting three wins, one draw, and two losses. Seychelles, on the other hand, remains at the bottom of the group, still without a point from their six matches.

Burundi’s clinical display highlights their growing strength in the qualifiers, while Seychelles will need to regroup and rethink their strategy if they are to improve their fortunes in upcoming fixtures.

With this victory, Burundi continues to build momentum in their quest for World Cup qualification, and their remarkable performance will be a boost to their confidence as they look ahead to their next challenge.

The top team in each group secures direct qualification for the World Cup, while runners-up may advance to inter-confederation playoffs. With six matches remaining, Burundi’s pursuit of a top-two finish remains within reach.

To maintain their momentum, Burundi’s upcoming World Cup qualifying fixtures are as follows:

  • September 1, 2025: Côte d’Ivoire vs. Burundi
  • September 5, 2025: Gambia vs. Burundi
  • October 6, 2025: Burundi vs. Kenya
  • October 10, 2025: Gabon vs. Burundi
