Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza dies aged 55

Burundi president Pierre Nkurunziza was this Tuesday pronounced dead after a cardiac arrest on Monday 8th.2020 morning in one of the hospitals in Karusi province.

According to the Burundi government spokesman Prosper Ntahorwamiye, president Nkurunziza was on Saturday in good health as he was watching a volleyball game in countryside.

“His health deteriorated on Saturday night and was taken to Karuzi hospital Natwe Turashoboye and his health improved on Sunday however the health changed drastically and he got a cardiac arrest,” said Mr. Ntahorwamiye.

President Pierre Nkurunziza took over the office in 2005 from which he ruled the country for 15 years, making him the first ever Burundi president to rule the country for 15 years.

President Pierre Nkurunziza was expected to end his term this August as the president elect Evariste Ndayishimiye was expected to be sworn in on 20th August. 2020.

“We have declared seven days of mourning starting from today and more information about the funeral will be communicated after,” said the government spokesman.

Flags in Burundi are expected to fly at half-mast and people to mourn for one week after a sudden death of the country’s president Pierre Nkurunziza.

President Pierre Nkurunziza was a father of five children and a husband to Denise Nkurunziza.
