Musongati FC won the president’s cup 2020 edition after a penalty shootout against Rukinzo football club in Mwumba commune located in Ngozi province.
Musongati had taken the early lead just two minutes into the game courtesy from a sublime finish from Yves Kireko but the lead didn’t last long as Derick Kalulika of Rukinzo cancelled out the lead in the 6th minute.
The game remained all square for the 90 minutes and the extra time and the two teams had to be separated in the penalty shootout, “we played on our level best and all at the end was because of God’s grace,” said Denis Karera the president of Musongati FC.
Musongati FC that won the last Saturday’s encounter booked their ticket to participate in the next year’s African Confederation Cup after scoring 5 penalties against the 4 from Rukinzo at Rukundo stadium in Ngozi.
Musongati FC was awarded a cheque of 7.5 million Burundian Francs and trophy that was handed over to the team by Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye, while Rukinzo FC bagged 5 million Burundian francs in the second place.
Before the kick-off Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye and the chair of Burundi’s Football Federation (FFB) Reverien Ndikuriyo honored the late Burundi former President Pierre Nkurunziza by providing some prizes to his son Kelly Nkurunziza and a minute of silence was observed before the game got underway.
Medals were given to the best goal keeper of the tournament Onesime Rukundo, Arthur Nibikora as the best young player, Iddy Muselemu as the top scorer.
While Jimmy Ndayizeye was also awarded as the best coach and Jospin Nshimirimana as a best player.
