As Burundi marked the Labour Day under the theme “Let’s work so as everyone reap what they sow”, president Evariste Ndayishimiye was yet again critical to public servants whom he said were not innovative and only depended on monthly salaries.

“Most of the public servants are like domestic workers or maids who only wait to get those small change…farmers are now becoming the investors in the country we need more of a kind like one of mushroom farmers who are making more than 90million Bif in profit annually,” said president Ndayishimiye.

President Ndayishimiye’s comments came during the celebrations of the Labour Day in Kayanza where different companies, associations and institutions showcased their products and services they offer in the country.

“How many public servants can buy a motorcycles…public servants are not workers….we need people to work to start entrepreneurship so that they can empower themselves and the society,” said the Burundian president.

The International Labour Day in Burundi is traditionally celebrated by the working classes in corporate sector including the farmers, where they parade in uniforms, march in a specific location while showcasing their products and services.

The country celebrated the day amid inflation in commodity prices, according to the country’s Central Bank (BRB) the inflation rate for the month of March stood at 14 percent compared to 17 percent in February, 2024.
