US-Burundi army readiness medical exercise kicks-off

A medical readiness exercise by U.S. Army medical personnel alongside members of the Burundi National Defense Force kicked off on Monday 8 April 2024 in Kamenge Military Hospital in Bujumbura.

According to the United States Embassy in Burundi, the exercise that started yesterday will proceed until April 6th, 2024.

“The objectives of the exercise include enhancing medical capabilities through shared best practices, preparing medical forces for multinational operations in humanitarian

assistance, disaster relief, and aeromedical evacuation; and promoting interoperability,” a statement reads from the US embassy.

The medical exercise also focuses in specific focus areas icnluding intensive care unit operations, emergency department operations, and operating room techniques and practices.

According to the US embassy the medical readiness exercise follows a separate engagement April 3 – 6, 2024 by U.S. Army soldiers with members of the BNDF that focused on enhancing the ability to respond to natural disasters and provide humanitarian assistance.  

 The US government in a statement indicated that by collaborating and coordinating with Burundian governmental agencies, local communities, and international partners, these exercises demonstrate the United States government’s commitment to fostering resilience and providing timely support to those affected by large scale medical emergencies, natural disasters, and humanitarian crises.
