The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Speaker Joseph Ntakirutimana has called for EALA autonomy of the regional assembly sighting that the organ of the community does not freely conduct its activities due to lack of funds.
“It is better if EALA is given its freedom…this is not only my voice but the voices of the lawmakers. And what we want to achieve is not only for us but for the generations to come,” said the EALA speaker during the 15th meeting the EAC Speakers Bureau that met last Friday in Arusha, Tanzania.
The EAC Council of Ministers and the Summit approved the assembly’s request, but there was a plan that the secretariat had to review, in order to propose modalities for autonomy.
The East African Legislative Assembly and the East African Court of Justice are the two organs of the self-governing community.
