Albinos under threat in Burundi, says local organization

A new report released by ONLCT a local non governmental organization says it documented cases of trafficking of albinos to Tanzania.

“There is organ trafficking of parts of albinos for superstition. Indeed, this was the case for two albino children, one from Karusi province and the other from Cankuzo province,” said Prime Mbarubukeye the president of OLCT.

“We call on the Burundian Government to raise awareness among the entire Burundian population in general and all local leaders at all levels to double their vigilance in order to combat the phenomenon of human trafficking in Burundi given that the victims are our children,” said Mr. Mbarubukeye.

Mbarubukeye said that the government needs to enact a law on the specific protection of persons born or affected by albinism, “because the ONLCT finds that this category of the Burundian population deserves attention and protection,” he added.
