Burundi Launches One Health Initiative for Pandemic Preparedness

Burundi has launched a new initiative focused on the “One Health” approach, aiming to improve pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response across human, animal, and environmental sectors. The program, which is a collaboration between the Burundian government, the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), was officially introduced during a planning workshop in Ngozi.

The initiative, funded by The Pandemic Fund, is designed to strengthen national, regional, and global capacities to address health threats, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. It seeks to build resilient health systems that can respond to emerging crises such as monkeypox (Mpox).

Dr. Xavier Crespin World Health Organisation representative in Burundi, emphasised the importance of a multi-sectoral approach to epidemic management. In his address, he stressed that the integration of both human and animal health systems is crucial for managing future health risks.

The launch of the project reflects a broader commitment to addressing the interconnected nature of health issues across humans, animals, and the environment, with the goal of preventing future pandemics.
