Burundi’s passport has dropped to the 92nd position in the 2025 Henley Passport Index, ranking among the least powerful in terms of visa-free travel. The country’s passport, which allows access to 50 destinations without a visa, fell two spots from the 90th position it held in 2024.

The 2025 index, compiled by global citizenship and residence advisory firm Henley & Partners, highlights Burundi’s decline in international mobility compared to other countries. In 2024, Burundi shared the 90th spot with Bhutan, Egypt, and Liberia, while Angola and Vietnam held the 91st position. The country’s passport ranking has shown a downward trend over the years, with its highest rank of 78th recorded back in 2006.

Despite the drop, Burundi’s passport still allows access to several key destinations around the world, though it remains limited in comparison to more powerful passports that provide wider global access. The Henley Passport Index, which ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access visa-free or with visa-on-arrival, serves as a benchmark for global mobility.
