Burundi: ‘Traffic police are targeted, two killed’

Burundi Ministry of Internal Affairs bemoans the road accidents that has been happening recently indicating that the traffic police have been systematically knocked down on the roads while performing their duty.

“Since the beginning of 2022, 37 policemen have been victims of road accidents. They have caused death of 2 police officers whereas 35 of them were injured. The recent accident that caused the passing of a policeman was recorded on 12th July 2022 in Bujumbura,” said Pierre Nkurikiye the spokesman of Burundi’s Internal Affairs and Public Security minister.

“The conclusion is that majority of those accidents, involved vehicles that voluntarily knock policemen and then drivers run away after committing that accident and leave their vehicles behind,” Mr. Nkurikiye.

The Burundi ministry of Internal Affairs and Public Security said that those committing crimes and abscond will be followed and held responsible for the damages caused.

“Policemen knocked are Burundian citizens who are on their duties and they are citizens who have been handed a tough mission to protect others’ lives and goods,” a statement read from the public security minister Gervais Ndirakobuca.
