Flood victims remain stranded as government provides relief aid

According to the local authorities in Bujumbura more than 8,000 families remain stranded and in need of shelter after River Rusizi busted its banks and destroyed properties and houses of Gatumba residents last month.

“Some of the flood victims were displaced to Kigaramango,Kinyinya and others are in Maramvya but they are in need of shelter,” said Nadine Gacuti a local administrator in Bujumbura.

“Recently we provided relief to children and today we are distributing 12 tons of rice, 5 tons of beans, 2.200 tons of maize grain and 810 boxes of soap,” said Burundi’s public security minister Alain Guillaume Bunyoni.

Mr. Bunyoni vowed to provide shelters for the flood victims as many are overcrowded in small makeshift tents with their families.

“We are here after the floods destroyed our properties,the whole family share one tent no matter the number of family members,for instance I am living in this tent with my four children. we have got 5 toilets,” said Imelde Uwizeyimana.
