573 Burundian refugees return home

The Namibian government last week directed its ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration. Safety and Security to enter into an agreement by signing the Exchange of Letters with the Government of the Republic of Burundi and the UNHCR Regional Representative, PHOTO|FILE.

More than five hundred Burundian refugees arrived on wednesday from neighboring Tanzania after spending almost five years in the refugee camps.

According to the Burundian authority 573 Burundians were voluntarily repatriated from several refugee camps in Tanzania under assistance of UNHCR and the hosting country.

“188 households were repatriated from refugee camps in neighboring Tanzania by UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and were warmly welcomed in Makamba” statement read from the Burundi Ministry of the public security.

To date, approximately 79,000 Burundian refugees were voluntarily repatriated since September 2017.
