A joint team of Ugandan police, military personnel and other security operatives on Saturday raided the home of former parliamentary speaker Anita Among in Kampala as part of an investigation into alleged illicit enrichment and corruption-related offenses, according to local media reports.
The operation took place at Among’s residence in the upscale Nakasero area near Fairway Hotel in Kampala.
Some local medias in Uganda reported that “a joint security team led by the CID, with support from UPDF and other security agencies, has raided former Speaker Anita Among’s residence.”
The operation was linked to “an ongoing corruption probe into alleged illicit enrichment and money laundering.”
Authorities had not immediately issued an official statement detailing the scope of the investigation or whether arrests had been made by Saturday evening.
Videos and images circulating on social media appeared to show heavily armed security personnel deployed around the residence, attracting crowds of onlookers and heightened public attention.
Among, a senior member of the ruling National Resistance Movement, served as speaker of parliament until earlier this year and has in recent years faced scrutiny from anti-corruption activists and opposition figures over parliamentary spending and allegations of misuse of public resources.
The raid comes amid growing scrutiny of Among, who was sanctioned by the United States and the United Kingdom in 2024 over allegations of corruption and misuse of public office during her tenure as speaker of Uganda’s parliament. Among has denied the allegations.
The development also comes as the government of President Yoweri Museveni has repeatedly pledged tougher action against corruption and misuse of public funds.
Uganda has long struggled with corruption allegations involving senior public officials despite the existence of anti-graft agencies and periodic government crackdowns. International watchdogs have repeatedly ranked the East African nation among countries facing persistent governance and accountability challenges.
No formal charges against Among had been publicly announced by Saturday evening.
