The Burundi president Evariste Ndayishimiye this Monday officially inaugurated Mubuga Solar Plant in the country’s capital Gitega.
The solar energy plant was created between the Burundi government and GigaWatt Global which is expected to generate 7.5MW.
In his speech, the Head of State hailed “a real accelerator of socio-economic development”.
Yosef Abramowitz the CEO of GigaWatt Global said that the socio-economic impact of the clean energy source is priceless.
Gigawatt Global is a renewable energy company focused on the development and management of utility-scale solar fields in emerging markets.
The solar plant in Burundi produces and estimated 7.5 MW field and has been operating in the country since April 2021. The plant provides over 10 percent of the country’s electricity.
The Solar Plant is said to have created almost 400 jobs, the Solar plant provides electricity to tens of thousands of homes and businesses around the province and the country.
According to the Burundian president, the unveiling of the new solar plant will help reduce the energy deficit in the country paving the way to the country’s vision as “Burundi an emerging country in 2040 and developed in 2060”.
