Burundi earned promotion to the 2027 Davis Cup World Group II playoffs after finishing second in the Africa Group III tournament hosted in Bujumbura over the weekend.
The five-day tournament, held Aug. 11-15 at the Entente Sportive de Bujumbura, brought together Burundi, Senegal, Namibia, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire and Togo. The top teams advanced to the next stage of the Davis Cup competition.
Burundi made a strong start on home soil, defeating Togo 3-0 on the opening day. The hosts then continued their campaign with another important victory as they pursued one of the promotion places.
The Burundian team’s push for promotion was briefly disrupted on Friday when Senegal defeated the hosts 2-1 in a decisive tie. The result secured Senegal’s promotion and left Burundi needing to maintain its position among the leading teams.
Burundi ultimately finished second behind Senegal, securing its place in the 2027 World Group II playoffs. Namibia also secured promotion after finishing third. The official Davis Cup results list Senegal and Burundi at the top of the Group III standings, with Namibia also among the leading teams.
The result represents a significant step for Burundi’s men’s tennis team, which was competing in front of a home crowd at the Entente Sportive de Bujumbura. The tournament was played on outdoor clay courts.
Senegal finished the tournament unbeaten and secured the top position, while Burundi’s second-place finish earned the hosts a route into the World Group II playoff stage.
The promotion means Burundi will face a higher level of opposition in the next stage of the Davis Cup pathway as it seeks to continue its rise in international men’s tennis.
The Africa Group III tournament was the final event of the 2026 summer Davis Cup schedule.
