Fire breaks out at Kinindo market in Bujumbura, eighth blaze to hit Burundi in 2026

A fire broke out at the Kinindo market in Bujumbura on Tuesday morning, damaging several properties in what is at least the eighth fire to strike a market, commercial site or public facility in Burundi this year.

The fire began around 10 a.m. when a huge smoke sent vendors into panic. Police had arrived on the ground by midday but had not yet released an official assessment of the damage. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Kinindo, located in western Bujumbura, functions primarily as a wholesale and storage market for food products and has also served as a bus parking and transit point for routes connecting the capital to southern Burundi.

A year marked by fires

Tuesday’s blaze is the latest in a string of fires that have struck Burundi through 2026,

  • Jan. 26 — Commercial plank stalls burned near Kwa Siyoni, close to the Bujumbura City Market.
  • March 31 — An electrical fire at a military ammunition depot in Musaga, south Bujumbura, triggered explosions that killed at least 13 people and injured more than 57, according to official figures; unofficial estimates put the toll higher. Homes, vehicles and military facilities were damaged.
  • May 7 — A major fire at Kinama market, in Bujumbura’s Ntahangwa commune, was brought under control by around 11 a.m. The market was insured.
  • May 29 — A fire struck Cibitoke market in northwestern Burundi at night, days before the Kinama fire.
  • June 21 — Roughly half of the Jabe timber and planks market, in Bujumbura’s Mukaza commune, was destroyed. The cause was not established.
  • July 9 — A fire at Ngozi’s main market, in northern Burundi, killed one person and destroyed about 80% of the market’s stalls.
  • Aug. 21 — The Ndayizamba Gallery and neighboring Le Parisien gallery, a shopping complex in central Bujumbura, were razed by fire.
  • Aug. 25 — Fire breaks out at Kinindo market.

The recurrence of major fires at the country’s markets and commercial centers has drawn public scrutiny. Following the August 21 gallery fire, Gabriel Rufyiri, chairman of the civil society group OLUCOME, called on Burundi’s National Security Council to examine the pattern and determine whether the incidents share a common cause. No findings from that or earlier fires have been made public that would explain Tuesday’s fire at Kinindo.
