Burundi defeats Namibia in African Cup qualifiers

Burundi’s Intamba mu Rugamba defeated Namibia’s Brave Warriors this Tuesday by 3-2 in their attempt to qualify for the continental prestigious competition the 2023 African Cup of Nations.

Namibia just needed one point to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations only for the Intamba mu Rugamba to spoil their party.

As the game was played in Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Tanzania, Burundi broke the deadlock one minute into the game through Abedi Bigirimana’s effort, the hosts extended their lead in the 9th minute through a 25 year old Kaizer Chiefs striker Bonfils Caleb Bimenyimana.

The visiting team tried to get into the game only for the hosts Intamba mu Rugamba to extend their lead in the 19th minute after a count attack that saw Hussein Shabalala Shabani cheeping Zambia’s goalkeeper after a majestic pass from Bonfils Caleb Bimenyimana on the right flank to make it 3-0.

However the Brave Warriors pulled one back before the break thanks to the effort from Peter Shalulile in the 41st minute.

The visitors (Namibia) dominated most of the second half and it was not until the 85th minute when the Brave Warriors’ substitute Wendell Rudath made it 3-2.

Burundi’s Intamba mu Rugamba were made to hold their breath during the dying minutes of the game to grab all the 3 points, the result leaves Namibia on the top of the Group C table with 5 points, Cameroon on the second place with 4 points while Burundi is in the third place with 4 points separated by goal difference with Cameroon.
