Former Prime minister Bunyoni absconds

Alain Guillaume Bunyoni Burundi’s former and first Prime Minister under the country’s 2018 constitution absconded according to Burundi’s Internal Affairs and Public Security minister Martin Niteretse.

“I am not informed about the reason he is being wanted by the Prosecutor General’s office but what we know he is no where to be seen,” said the Internal Affairs minister while addressing journalists in Bujumbura.

The country’s most decorated Police officer is said to have gone missing after a cordon and search operation was conducted in his residence on Monday 17th April, 2023.

On Monday, Bunyoni’s whereabouts trended on social media as netizens claimed the ex former prime minister left the country.

“You know sometimes social media talks about issues sometimes true and most of the time are fake news however for now we can say that he is wanted by the General prosecutor’s office,” said Martin Niteretse.

Alain Guillaume Bunyoni who was ranked as the Field Marshal by President Pierre Nkurunziza was removed from the office of Prime Minister last September after falling apart with president Evaritse Ndayishimiye.

Political analysts say his removal from the office was largely due to his continued public comments of threatening to replace the incumbent president.

Early this week, netizens claimed that top Burundi security officials were detained after it was revealed that Bunyoni’s whereabouts wasn’t known by Gitega.

“What I know is that Museremu is not arrested but he was replaced in his office so it’s not linked with the ongoing case,” said the Internal Affairs minister.

The former Prime Minister is under sanction by the US State Department accused of Human Rights violations back in 2015.
