Burundi declares Cholera epidemic as cases surge

Burundi’s Ministry of Health have declared Cholera an epidemic in Bujumbura and warned residents to continue practicing hygiene measures a mid spike in new Cholera cases.

According to the spokesman of Burundi’s Ministry of Health Polycarpe Ndayikeza, at least 12 new Cholera cases have been registered in Bujumbura city on September 4th,2023.

“kw’Isamariro (2 Cases), Gihosha Zone, Nyabagere District (2 Cases), Muyaga (1 Case) Kinama Area: Muramvya District (1 Case), from the Bujumbura South Health District, Kanyosha Zone, Muyira District (1 Case), From the Isare health district; Mutambu area, Gakungwe Hill (1 cases) and Rubirizi Zone, Gatunguru Hill (1 Case), Gatumba Zone, Muyange Hill 1 (2 Case) and Tenga Hill (1 Case),” said Dr. Ndayikeza.

“We ask the population of the affected areas to make a special effort for the sanitation of the environment and the correct use of latrines,” he added.

The announcement comes at a time when residents have been lamenting of the lack of clean water in the Bujumbura neighborhood.
