The 2026-27 Primus Ligue Burundi season kicks off Friday, Aug. 14, with eight matches scheduled across the country as clubs begin the race for the national championship.
The Burundi Football Federation (FFB) has confirmed the opening-day program, with the first match sending Muzinga FC against Never Give Up AC at 1 p.m. at Stade Urunani.
The same venue will host a second Friday fixture at 3:45 p.m., when Rukinzo FC face Panthère Noire FC.
Saturday’s only match will see Vision FC host Musongati FC at 3 p.m. at Stade Urunani.
The remaining five fixtures will be played Sunday, including one of the weekend’s most anticipated encounters — the capital-city derby between Vital’O FC and Inter Stars.
Vital’O will host Inter Stars at 3 p.m. at Stade Intwari in a matchup expected to draw significant attention as the two clubs begin their new league campaigns.
Other Sunday fixtures include Aigle Noir CS vs. Olympic Star at Stade NPPC, Kayanza United vs. Flambeau du Centre at Stade Gatwaro and Bumamuru FC vs. Messager Ngozi at Stade Urunani, all scheduled for 3 p.m.
Ngozi City will face Young Star FC at Stade Urukundo, while the opening round will also feature Vital’O FC’s derby against Inter Stars at Stade Intwari.
FFB outlines plans for new season
The start of the league follows an Aug. 8 FFB press conference held ahead of the 2026 Super Cup, where federation president Alexandre Muyenge, discussed preparations for the new domestic season alongside First Vice President Arcade Nimubona.
The federation said the meeting addressed the 2026-27 Primus Ligue launch, promotion and relegation issues, upcoming matches involving the national team, Intamba mu Rugamba, in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and broader plans for the development of Burundian football.
One of the federation’s key infrastructure projects is the planned installation of synthetic turf at three sites: Agasaka Stadium in Ngozi, SOSUMO Stadium in Rutana and the Ngagara field near the National Technical Center.
According to the FFB, work is scheduled to begin in September 2026, although the timetable could change depending on implementation conditions.
The federation has presented the project as part of its broader effort to improve football infrastructure and create better playing and training facilities across the country.
For the clubs, however, the immediate focus will be on the opening weekend and the opportunity to start the new campaign with points on the board.
With eight matches spread across three days, the first round will offer an early indication of how the new season could take shape while the Vital’O-Inter Stars derby provides one of the opening weekend’s biggest tests of ambition.
