AU Calls for Action After Deadly Migrant Boat Capsizing Off Djibouti

The African Union has called for stronger regional and international cooperation to prevent migrant deaths after a boat capsized off Djibouti, killing dozens of people, including children.

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, chairperson of the African Union Commission, expressed sorrow over the deaths and offered condolences to the families of the victims, according to an AU statement.

The statement cited a United Nations report that put the death toll at 109. Subsequent reporting may revise the figure as search and recovery operations continue.

Youssouf called for greater cooperation to address the causes of irregular migration, combat migrant smuggling and human trafficking, and promote safe, orderly and regular migration.

He also reaffirmed the AU Commission’s commitment to working with member states and international partners to protect migrants, particularly vulnerable groups such as children.

Dangerous migration route

The waters between the Horn of Africa and Yemen form part of a migration corridor used by people seeking employment and other opportunities in Gulf countries.

The crossing exposes migrants to risks including shipwrecks, exploitation and abuse by smugglers. Conflict and economic hardship also contribute to migration along the route.

The disaster highlights the dangers faced by people attempting irregular sea crossings and the challenges facing governments and humanitarian organizations working to prevent deaths.

The AU statement did not announce specific new measures in response to the incident or identify those responsible for the capsizing.

The organization said it would continue working with member states and partners to strengthen coordinated efforts to protect migrants’ lives and dignity and prevent similar tragedies.
