Africa faces mounting jobs challenge as youth population surges toward 2035

Africa’s youth population is expanding rapidly, with nearly 500 million people expected to reach working age by 2035, intensifying the need for large-scale job creation across the continent.

Employment will be central to determining whether this demographic shift becomes a catalyst for growth or a source of instability. For millions of young Africans, access to decent work represents more than income — it offers dignity, empowerment and a stake in shared prosperity.

The urgency is mounting. Economies across Africa must generate enough quality jobs to absorb the growing labor force, a task that will require sustained investment, policy reform and private-sector engagement. Failure to act could leave millions without opportunities, deepening inequality and social pressure.

The stakes extend beyond the continent. How Africa responds to this demographic moment will shape global economic growth, migration patterns and stability in the decades ahead, making youth employment not only a regional priority but an international concern.
