4 killed in a heavy downpour in Makamba

Four children have died after a Pentecostal church collapsed during a torrential rain this Sunday morning.

“In this Church there were 60 children who were attending a Sunday School Children when the church collapsed during a heavy rain that consisted hail and wind,” a statement from the Internal Affairs Ministry reads.

According to the Burundi Ministry of Interior, 15 other children were injured and rushed to the nearby hospital.

Gitega said that atleast 39 houses, 8 classrooms and 3 churches were destroyed.

The number of the victims is expected to rise according to Interior ministry as search and rescue teams continue to search for victims.
