Burundi: 721 returns home from Tanzania

“Those repatriated consisted of 273 households that included 328 men and 393 women with their province of origin being Makamba and Rutana,” – Burundi police spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye.

Burundi government on Tuesday May 14th said that 721 Burundians were repatriated from Tanzania through Mugina border under the tripartite agreement between the Tanzanian and Burundian government with UNHCR.

“Those repatriated consisted of 273 households that included 328 men and 393 women with their province of origin being Makamba and Rutana,” said Burundi police spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye.

According to the Burundian government the returnees were from Nyarugusu refugee camp in Tanzania.

The exercise is part of the Tanzania, Burundi and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) voluntary repatriation exercise of Burundian refugees from Tanzania.

The voluntary repatriation exercise of Burundian refugees is undertaken in pone continued phase with possibility of a gradual increase in the number of refugees being repatriated.

According to the tripartite commission the repatriation exercise that commenced on 7th September 2017 had been undertaken with success and even exceeded the planned figures, while no reported security incident affected returnees and none of the returnees assisted again sought asylum back in Tanzania.
